WWE 2K26 review: Faster gameplay, iconic returns make wrestling simulation fun

With WrestleMania on the horizon, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the latest WWE video game, WWE 2K26. This installment has generated significant excitement, quickly establishing itself as the pinnacle of WWE gaming. WWE 2K26 stands out by seamlessly blending the thrill of sports with the drama of entertainment, providing players around the globe with a captivating real-time experience. Featuring CM Punk, the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, as its cover star, the game includes a Showcase mode that allows players to relive some of Punk’s most memorable matches throughout his illustrious career.

The final verdict – What works and what doesn’t

The newly introduced Ringside Pass in WWE 2K26 empowers players to unlock superstars, cosmetics, and various in-game content. Among the array of free rewards, players can access new arenas, superstars, and championships. With an impressive roster featuring over 400 playable characters, WWE 2K26 boasts the largest lineup in the franchise’s history, including both new faces like Rusev and Blake Monroe, as well as familiar names such as Rey Fenix.

WWE 2K26 is a significant addition to the series, enhancing gameplay speed and introducing new features that allow fans to immerse themselves fully in the WWE universe. Yet, some aspects still fall short. The Showcase mode, while introducing new elements, requires further refinement, as does the Island feature. Additionally, while the new battle pass adds a layer of engagement, it also raises costs without delivering sufficiently rewarding content.

One of the standout features of WWE 2K26 is its visuals. The enhanced physics, impactful wrestler collisions, and improved collision mechanics contribute to an elevated gameplay experience. Attacks land more effectively, and the resulting effects on opponents feel purposeful. However, similar to previous installments, interactions with breakable tables can be frustrating, often resulting in unpredictable behavior regardless of player precision.

While WWE 2K26 may not revolutionize the franchise, it excels in critical areas. Gameplay has been refined, and some modes have seen notable expansions, resulting in one of the most polished wrestling experiences in recent history. This installment confidently strides forward, effectively capturing the essence of both the spectacle and narrative that define professional wrestling.

Player Focus

A key highlight of the game is its engaging gameplay, which revitalizes the experience reminiscent of classic titles like WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain, filling the gap left by the mixed feedback on WWE All Stars. Players can toss opponents off stages, slam them into dumpsters, or launch them from an ambulance onto concrete floors and backstage areas. The interactive entrances allow for dramatic pyro displays, and superstars can interact with and taunt the crowd. A significant new feature is the ‘stamina’ system, which visibly impacts superstars when they become exhausted during matches.

When the stamina meter shifts from yellow to purple, superstars are unable to sprint effectively or execute reversals. Players can only regain the reversing ability once the stamina meter is fully depleted and reset, adding a layer of strategy, as each offensive and defensive action in the ring becomes more consequential.

The game also brings back fan-favorite match types like the Dumpster Match, Inferno Match, I Quit, and Three Stages of Hell. In the Three Stages of Hell, players can choose three different stipulations to compete in a best two-out-of-three falls format. The Dumpster Match resembles the Casket or Ambulance match, where victory is achieved by tossing the opponent into a box they wish to escape.

The MyRise mode, allowing players to create their own wrestler, follows the Archetype system. Its storyline centers on a former top star returning to the ring after a hiatus to reclaim their lost momentum. It’s well-developed and filled with surprises, enhancing the overall gaming experience. MyRise also adopts a coherent narrative approach, providing insight into the workings of WWE in real time.

In the Showcase mode, players can reenact pivotal moments of CM Punk’s career, even stepping into the shoes of Bret Hart to alter the outcome of the notorious Montreal match against Shawn Michaels. This mode features intriguing ‘what if’ scenarios, starting with last year’s WrestleMania, where both Punk and Roman Reigns experienced betrayal by Paul Heyman.

The game also features ‘The Island’, an upgraded mode that offers an alternate reality for players similar to a Street Fighter 6 World Tour-style multiplayer experience. Here, users can create their own wrestlers and engage in open-world, family-friendly quests, while competing on leaderboards. Although it was disappointing in WWE 2K25, The Island brings a different dimension to the gameplay.

In WWE 2K26, players have the option to draft rosters from multiple brands—WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown—against an AI-managed general manager in Universe Mode, significantly enhancing control over show dynamics. The MyGM mode has undergone expansion, offering 50-week seasons, a variety of premium live events, and additional match types. Players can now book intergender matches and rival superstars can engage in promos during the same show.

Team Analysis

In WWE 2K26, the Showcase mode delves into the significant moments of CM Punk’s career, highlighting both his triumphs and challenges. This segment of the game has sparked considerable debate among players and could be its most divisive element. While the matches featuring Punk are captivating, there are noticeable gaps in the narrative. Notably absent is an explanation for Punk’s near decade-long departure from WWE. Additionally, the absence of wrestlers who have moved to competing promotions eliminates the opportunity for dream matchups, such as one between Punk and Edge.

Match Outlook

The Inferno match makes a thrilling comeback from the SmackDown vs Raw series. As you execute moves within the ring, the surrounding temperature intensifies. Once you reach the maximum heat level, your objective is to throw your opponent into the flames to claim victory. The stunning graphics featured in the Inferno match are exceptional, solidifying WWE 2K26 as the most visually impressive title in the franchise.
