New Delhi: Ashish Yadav made history as the first Indian to win a medal in men’s javelin at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships since Neeraj Chopra. Competing against a strong field in Eugene, Oregon, Yadav secured the silver medal with an impressive throw measuring 74.09 meters.

At this pivotal moment, two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra made his mark on the world stage with a stunning junior world record throw of 86.48 meters, a feat that remains unbeaten as the World U20 best. Since that memorable championship in Poland, the javelin events have sparked interest among Indian fans, but no athlete had reached the podium until Yadav did so on Friday.
Yadav advanced to the finals with a throw of 69.80 meters, while his compatriot T Dharanidharan also secured a final spot with a distance of 68.07 meters. During the final, Yadav, who had a personal best of 74.49 meters prior to the tournament, climbed to second place with his third throw landing at 74.09 meters. His series included throws of 69.96m, x, 74.09m, 72.31m, 70.62m, and 67.98m.
South Africa’s Jan Hendrik Heymans dominated the competition, clinching the gold medal with an impressive throw of 80.50 meters in his final attempt, marking a season’s best for his age group. He initially took the lead with his first throw of 76.92 meters. Addison James from Dominica secured third place with a throw of 73.89 meters, while Dharanidharan finished sixth with a distance of 72.35 meters.
Despite the ongoing interest, no Indian athlete had previously reached the podium in recent years. In the 2022 World U20 Championships, Vivek Kumar narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth with a personal best of 72.17 meters. In 2021, Kunwer Ajai Singh Rana and Jay Kumar placed fifth and sixth, respectively, and in 2018, Sahil Silwal also finished fourth.

Chopra’s remarkable achievement in 2016 established him as the first world junior athletics champion from India.
