Since 2025, Steve has been the defensive coordinator for North Carolina, bringing a wealth of experience from his extensive NFL background, notably gained while working alongside his father with the Patriots. In August of last year, he secured a two-year contract worth $2.7 million, earning him the distinction of being the highest-paid assistant coach on the Tar Heels’ coaching staff.
His departure presents a significant challenge for North Carolina, particularly as the team embarks on its second season under coach Bill Belichick.
During his inaugural season as defensive coordinator, Steve led the Tar Heels to a national ranking of 25th for yards allowed per play (4.94) and limited opponents to an average of just 3.34 plays of 20 yards or more per game, the 11th-best statistic nationwide.
