Indian shot put athletes Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill secured their spots in the final round of the Commonwealth Games with relative ease on Wednesday.

National record holder Toor made two attempts to surpass the automatic qualification mark of 20m in Group A. His first throw reached 19.93m, followed by a successful second attempt of 20.14m, marking the second best distance overall. He opted not to take a third attempt.
In Group B’s qualification round, Gill achieved a best throw of 19.95m on his first attempt. His subsequent attempts measured 19.75m and a foul, respectively. Gill ultimately placed fifth overall among the 15 competitors from both groups, with Group A featuring seven athletes and Group B featuring eight.
To qualify for the finals scheduled for Thursday, athletes must exceed the 20m mark or be among the 12 best performers.
New Zealand’s defending champion and favorite, Tom Walsh, secured the top overall position with an impressive first-round throw of 21.03m in Group A.
Toor, aged 31, holds a season’s best of 21.03m, while his national record stands at 21.77m, achieved in 2023.

Toor, a two-time gold medalist from the Asian Games, is taking part in his second Commonwealth Games after finishing eighth in Gold Coast in 2018.
