A racist text message shared publicly by Los Angeles Sparks star Dearica Hamby has led to the termination of the employee who allegedly sent it, according to USA Today.

WNBA forward Dearica Hamby is at the center of a controversy following a disturbing online incident. On August 24, the 32-year-old Sparks player shared a screenshot on social media that included a message from an unknown number. The text contained a racial slur and made an animalistic comparison directed at her. Hamby further amplified the issue by posting the sender’s phone number and asking her nearly 50,000 followers on X if anyone recognized it.
In response to the incident, the company associated with Hamby issued a statement on social media. They condemned racism, harassment, hate speech, and discrimination in all forms, emphasizing that the employee’s online remarks do not align with the company’s values and standards.
After Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas was suspended for one game in June for striking Caitlin Clark in the throat, Thomas said she had also been subjected to death threats and racist messages online. Hamby is the latest WNBA player to publicly address racist abuse or threats as players continue to face harassment away from the court. The league has faced further scrutiny over online abuse following several high-profile incidents involving its players.
