Many young boxers are unaware of the elite level of the sport and its intricacies. My understanding only deepened when I joined ASI. We need to enhance grassroots facilities, emphasizing scientific training and sports psychology.” He acknowledges the support from Sarita Di, who has been a constant source of encouragement and guidance.
In terms of infrastructure, the National Centers of Excellence (NCOEs) in Guwahati and Itanagar provide boxing training. Sarita notes that there are approximately 27 academies in Manipur. While Khelo India funding has been instrumental, financial hurdles persist. “A proper diet is essential for performance, and it requires significant investment. Additionally, athletes incur substantial travel costs for domestic competitions, which we help manage,” she explains.

Suranjoy Singh, a former international boxer turned national coach, shares, “Those living in academies can train consistently, but the training schedules for boxers from remote areas face frequent interruptions.”

The boxer, who secured a silver medal in the 55kg weight category, trains at the Army Sports Institute in Pune (ASI) and advocates for enhancements in grassroots facilities. “I only returned home for two weeks last year. Bringing back a medal from Glasgow and witnessing the enthusiasm and support from my hometown fills me with pride,” he expressed.
Sarita emphasized the need to incorporate boxing into the programs of the SAI National Centre of Excellence in Imphal. “We’ve approached SAI officials regarding this matter. Previously, the NCOE in Imphal offered boxing training, which significantly helped us. Establishing a high-performance center for elite boxers, equipped with training and sports science support, is crucial for Manipur.”
“Increasing the number of national and zonal competitions would create more opportunities for athletes. A dedicated high-performance NCOE facility for boxers would greatly benefit the region,” he remarked.

Manipur has produced some of India’s most renowned boxers, including MC Mary Kom, Dingko Singh, Sarita Devi, and Suranjoy Singh. However, the last significant international medal for the state was secured by Mary Kom at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, where she clinched gold in the light flyweight category.
