New Delhi – The Indian women’s hockey team is set to embark on a tour of Australia for a series of four matches, scheduled from May 21 to June 3. This tour serves as crucial preparation for the upcoming Nation’s Cup in New Zealand, which is a stepping stone to the prestigious FIH Pro League.
Event Context
The FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup will take place from June 15 to June 21 in Auckland. The Indian team is set to compete against Australia in four matches at the Perth Hockey Stadium. To secure a spot in the Pro League after being relegated last year, India must triumph in this tournament.
Following their tour in Australia, the team will head to New Zealand to further prepare for the Nations Cup.
Since returning, the squad has been engaged in rigorous training at the SAI Bengaluru national camp, concentrating on enhancing critical skills in anticipation of a busy international schedule.
Team Analysis
The Indian women’s hockey team looks to build on a promising performance during their recent tour of Argentina, where they showcased significant determination, concluding the four-match series with two victories.
With the backing of Anandana and the Coca-Cola India Foundation, the team’s drag-flick specialists are scheduled to participate in a focused training clinic led by Dutch hockey icon Taeke Taekema, taking place in Perth and Auckland from May 26 to June 21.
Indian women’s team head coach Sjoerd Marijne expressed his enthusiasm for the tour, stating, ‘We are grateful to Hockey India for facilitating these matches, as they will allow us to pinpoint areas of improvement and evaluate our progress following our training camps.’ Marijne emphasized the importance of the recent matches against Argentina, noting, ‘This experience has set a benchmark for us. Now we can assess how close we are to replicating our last two victories and strive to maintain that momentum.’
Match Outlook
The first two matches are set to take place on May 26 and 27, followed by the next two games on May 29 and 30.
“To facilitate quicker acclimatization, we opted to break the travel into segments instead of taking a long flight. The weather conditions in New Zealand are cooler, which will be more similar to what we can expect in Australia,” he noted.
