Discipline and consistency need of the hour: Indian women’s hockey team coach Marijne

India look to test resources in European leg of Pro League ahead of World Cup, Asian

New Delhi – After a strong performance against Argentina, Sjoerd Marijne, head coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, emphasizes the importance of discipline for his players. He believes that maintaining discipline is essential for achieving consistent results in their upcoming competitions.

Event Context

The Indian hockey team secured a 2-2 draw against Argentina, ranked second in the world, during a four-match series. After dropping the first two games, India rallied to claim victory in the last two matches, thereby equalizing the series.

The upcoming Nations Cup is slated for June 15 to 21 in Auckland, where India will compete in all four of its matches against Australia at the Perth Hockey Stadium. A tournament win is crucial for India as it seeks to re-enter the Pro League following its relegation last year.

Upon taking charge in January, the coach prioritized addressing a significant injury list that included nearly 14 players. With World Cup qualification looming, there was little room for long-term development strategies. However, India performed admirably during their tour of Argentina.

Marijne emphasized the importance of these tours and competitions as essential preparation for two major upcoming events: the World Cup and the Asian Games.

“Not only will we be playing matches, but we will also engage in training during this period, which will lead us into the Nations Cup. All of these tournaments and games are vital in preparing for the Asian Games,” he stated.

Player Focus

Injuries remain a significant concern for the team, as two players are currently sidelined indefinitely. ‘Unfortunately, both Sangeeta and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke are out due to ACL injuries. Vaishnavi recently underwent surgery, and Sangeeta had a similar procedure. Typically, recovery from an ACL injury can take anywhere from nine months to a year,’ he explained. Thankfully, the rest of the squad is in good health.

Team Analysis

Marijne, who led India to a remarkable fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics, resumed his role as head coach earlier this year. He emphasized that fitness would be his primary criterion for the team. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of discipline and fostering a strong team culture to achieve success on the global stage.

“Awareness of the game is crucial. Discipline ranks among my top priorities. We must also concentrate on building a solid team culture,” Marijne said.

India’s captain Salima Tete echoed this sentiment, stating that discipline is essential for success internationally.

“The players have been putting in considerable effort regarding fitness, as everyone recognizes its vital importance. With our fitness levels up, we stand a chance to compete with any team,” Tete remarked.

Match Outlook

India is set to visit Australia for a series of four matches from May 21 to June 3, as part of its training leading up to the FIH Nation’s Cup in New Zealand next month, which serves as a pathway to the prestigious FIH Pro League.

According to a representative during an online session hosted by the Sports Authority of India, “Argentina ranks second in the world, providing an opportunity for us to gauge the highest standards of international hockey.”

The representative emphasized the significance of understanding these benchmarks, which aided in enhancing the team’s fitness during the training camp. The upcoming Australia tour will include practice matches, allowing the team to adapt to a contrasting style of play compared to what they experienced in Argentina.

Reflecting on their recent tour in Argentina, where the team secured a win and earned a draw, the representative expressed satisfaction, saying, “It was encouraging to see the behavior I have always aimed for. My primary goal for both the Australia tour and the Nation’s Cup is to maintain our good practices and ensure continuity in our performance.”

“Achieving greater consistency in our gameplay will elevate our overall level,” the representative added. “Discipline is key to overcoming any opponent. Our tour to Australia will serve as excellent preparation, and we are committed to delivering our best performance.”
