ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Sean Payton is increasingly frustrated by the recurring muscle injuries plaguing his players, which have led them to seek refuge in the Denver Broncos’ training room at their new facility each day.
Event Context
Following Monday’s practice, the head coach of the Broncos addressed the team’s ongoing struggle with soft tissue injuries, noting that running back J.K. Dobbins was the latest player to leave the field limping. ‘We’ve dealt with a few strains, particularly in the hamstrings and groins, and we’re continuing to push through these challenges,’ he remarked. When asked about the impact of the current heat wave sweeping the nation, which has made Denver’s conditions feel more like those in Phoenix or New Orleans, Payton expressed skepticism that the weather was a contributing factor to the team’s injury woes.
Player Focus
In assessing player performance, it’s important to examine each athlete’s pre-practice routine and hydration status, rather than attributing issues solely to heat. Understanding an individual’s soft tissue condition can be challenging, so I consistently review the training activities leading up to any strain incidents. We implemented a warm-down after practice and will maintain our focus on this process.
During camp, several players have been sidelined, including wide receivers Jaylen Waddle and Marvin Mims Jr. as well as standout pass rusher Nik Bonitto. The most significant injury involves defensive lineman Matt Henningsen, who suffered a torn Achilles, marking a year since he incurred a similar injury during a joint practice with the 49ers.
Reflecting on team experiences, head coach Sean Payton recalled a memorable Saturday with players, including the late Cortez Kennedy. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect with 130 players at the hotel during a recent dinner, describing the experience as humbling and inspiring. He emphasized that the team is still actively engaged in their goals, living through these shared moments.
Kicker Wil Lutz, a former teammate of Drew Brees in New Orleans, attended the Canton celebrations and mentioned that his phone was buzzing after safety Brandon Jones successfully made three out of four field goals during Saturday’s scrimmage in Colorado.
Match Outlook
Injuries have plagued training camp, and unfortunately, Dobbins is among those expected to be sidelined for some time.
Coach Payton commented on the situation, saying, “It’s a soft tissue issue, but I believe he’ll be okay.”
Dobbins, who has a history of injuries, had previously expressed his commitment to making it through the 2026 season injury-free, even making a “pinky promise” to compete in all 17 regular-season games and the playoffs.
While Coach Payton was absent from practice on Saturday to attend the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction for the former Saints quarterback Drew Brees, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph stepped in to lead the session.
Kicker Lutz shared his thoughts on a talented teammate, stating, “I knew it was coming, and it didn’t surprise me that Brandon made three out of four kicks because of his skill and enthusiasm. Working with him is enjoyable. I also intend to get some reps at safety, and I’m sure that will spark conversation.”
