Event Context
The American women’s basketball team, which has impressively secured eight consecutive Olympic gold medals without suffering a single defeat, is gearing up to pursue their fifth straight World Cup title in Berlin from September 4-13. They have dominated the previous four tournaments in similar fashion, finishing without a loss.
“This is an incredibly skilled team that has rightfully earned this chance to compete in Berlin,” stated Sue Bird, managing director of the USA Basketball women’s national team, who notably participated in an unprecedented five World Cups herself.
With a total of 11 Women’s World Cup titles, the US women’s team features returning players who have collectively claimed 14 Olympic gold medals and nine World Cup victories.
New members Boston, Bueckers, Clark, Collier, Howard, Reese, and Young will experience their first World Cup play, while Copper, Gray, Plum, Stewart, and Wilson aim to defend their title after contributing to the 2022 championship win, with Wilson earning MVP honors in that tournament.
Notably, Boston, Bueckers, Clark, and Reese will be making their debuts in major international events for Team USA.
