Zahaan Hemrajani, a talented 14-year-old sailor from India, has showcased his exceptional skills at the 2026 O’pen Skiff World Championship held in Calasetta, Sardinia. He secured an impressive 8th place in the Under-17 Gold Fleet, competing against 106 sailors from around the globe. This achievement reinforces Zahaan’s reputation as one of India’s most promising young sailing talents, as he currently holds the 10th position in the world rankings for the O’pen Skiff class.

Zahaan, representing India and the Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC), delivered an outstanding performance throughout the championship. His accomplishments included a race victory and two second-place finishes, competing against some of the top young sailors worldwide. His remarkable consistency, resilience, and determination enabled him to secure a position among the top eight sailors globally in his age group.
Despite this success, the championship began with a major challenge. A structural crack in the hull of Zahaan’s boat caused it to take on water during his first-day races, significantly hindering his performance and leaving him trailing behind the leaders. Unfortunately, as the damage was to his own boat, he was not eligible for any redress under the competition rules.
In a commendable act of sportsmanship, the Polish national team provided Zahaan with a replacement hull starting from Day 2, which allowed him to continue his participation. He made a remarkable comeback, achieving finishes of 6-2-6-4-15-25-1-2-9-14-17 in the subsequent races, including a race win and two second-place finishes. This impressive turnaround propelled him into the top eight overall, marking one of the most notable comebacks of the championship.
Reflecting on this accomplishment, Zahaan’s father, Ashish Hemrajani, remarked, “There are more lessons for us as parents and coaches to learn from him than there are for us to teach him. Anyone else—kid or adult—would have given up. What he did from Day 2 onward wasn’t just sailing; it was character.”
