TORONTO — Max Scherzer of the Toronto Blue Jays achieved a significant milestone on Sunday, moving into ninth place on the all-time career strikeout list. He surpassed Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry in this latest achievement.
This accomplishment highlights Scherzer’s enduring performance as a right-handed pitcher, further solidifying his legacy in Major League Baseball.
Scherzer Achieves Milestone with 10 Strikeouts at Home
Max Scherzer recorded his season-high 10th strikeout during the game, marking the first time this season and the 115th occasion in his career that he has struck out 10 or more batters in a game. This performance surpassed his previous high of five strikeouts in a game.
After the game, Scherzer expressed his gratitude, stating, “I respect who’s on this list. To be moving up in the top 10 all-time means something. It’s great to do it here at home and have the fans really get into as well. That’s a special moment. Very thankful for my teammates and the fans, and their support.”
Historic Performance by Scherzer at 42
Max Scherzer, at 42 years old, delivered a remarkable performance on Sunday, becoming just the third pitcher in MLB history to throw seven or more innings, strike out 10 or more batters, and allow two or fewer baserunners. This feat has only been accomplished previously by Nolan Ryan, who did it twice, with his last occurrence on May 1, 1991, against Toronto during his final no-hitter.
In the first inning, Scherzer struck out all three batters he faced: Randy Arozarena, Dominic Canzone, and Julio Rodríguez.
“He was dialed from the very beginning and located everything really well, used his pitches really well,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson noted, “It seemed like we were behind the heater and out in front of the breaking ball. He just kept going back and forth and we weren’t able to solve it.”
