In Paris, Indian Grandmasters Nihal Sarin, Aravindh Chithambaram, Pranesh M, and Arjun Erigaisi are preparing to compete against a formidable lineup, which includes world number one Magnus Carlsen. This exciting chess event is part of the Esports World Cup, scheduled to take place from August 11 to 15.
Event Context
Indian chess has reached a remarkable milestone at the EWC. In the previous year, Nihal and Arjun were the sole representatives from India in the tournament. Nihal secured his spot through the Last Chance Qualifier and advanced to the quarterfinals, while Arjun, qualifying via the Champions Chess Tour, finished in fourth place.
This year, the Indian contingent has doubled, marking the largest representation from the country in the event’s history.
Following its successful debut last year, the Chess competition at EWC 2026 will introduce a new two-phase structure. The inaugural phase, known as the Play-In stage, will feature nine players who qualified through the Last Chance Qualifier and DreamHack Atlanta.
Subsequently, the Playoffs will adopt a single-elimination format, featuring four-game matches in the quarterfinals and six-game matches in the semifinals.
The champion of this year’s tournament will emerge after a Grand Final, which will be played over three sets.
Player Focus
The tournament will feature a double-elimination bracket where players engage in matches consisting of two games. In the initial Group Stage, 16 players will be split into two groups of eight, with each group adhering to a double-elimination format. The top four players from each group will move on to the Playoffs.

Nihal, Aravindh, and Pranesh, representing the esports and gaming content leader S8UL Esports, will join forces with Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi, who competes for Gen.G Esports. Together, they aim to claim a portion of the impressive USD 1.5 million prize pool, facing a distinguished lineup led by the reigning champion, Magnus Carlsen. This elite competition also features renowned players such as Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Hans Moke Niemann, along with several other Grandmasters from around the globe. Nihal, Pranesh, and Arjun earned their spots in the Group Stage thanks to their outstanding performances in the Champions Chess Tour 2025-2026, while Aravindh qualified through DreamHack Atlanta earlier this year and will begin his journey in the Play-In stage. The top contenders from the Play-In stage will progress to the Group Stage, where they will join those who secured direct entry via the CCT and other qualifying competitions.
