New Delhi: Approximately 600 athletes from India are set to participate in the Asian Games in Japan, competing across 35 different sports. On Thursday, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that the government will rigorously follow its selection criteria before giving final approval to the team for the Aichi-Nagoya Games, scheduled to take place from September 19 to October 4.
Event Context
The Sports Ministry has stated that the final roster for the Asian Games will be finalized only after a thorough assessment of the teams submitted by the respective federations. Only those athletes and support personnel approved as part of the sanctioned contingent will be eligible to participate in the Asian Games. An official emphasized, ‘The names put forward by the National Sports Federations (NSFs) will undergo scrutiny by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), a review by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), and must receive final endorsement from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS). Therefore, only athletes, coaches, and support staff included in the Sanction Order from MYAS will be recognized as part of the official Indian contingent for the Asian Games.’
Player Focus
The government is actively participating in various international events to provide athletes with valuable exposure. We urge federations to utilize these competitions and exposure tours to better prepare our athletes for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. By facilitating their participation in as many international competitions as possible, we aim to enhance their performance and improve our medal count at the LA Olympics. In line with this initiative, India will be sending a contingent of 126 athletes across 13 different sports to the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
Team Analysis
According to the selection criteria introduced last year, achieving a sixth-place finish at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games serves as a standard for individual sports. For team events, the benchmark is securing a top-eight finish at the continental championships or attaining a top-eight ranking in Asia. The guidelines are designed to prioritize athletes who have a genuine chance of winning medals in multi-disciplinary competitions.
Mandaviya emphasized that multi-sport events such as the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will not be considered as mere ‘exposure tours.’ India is focused on enhancing its competitiveness on the global stage and boosting its medal count at the Olympics.
During a media briefing, Mandaviya stated, ‘The Asian Games and Commonwealth Games are not just for exposure. These events provide our athletes with a platform to demonstrate their abilities and bring pride to our nation.’
Match Outlook
The Asian Games will showcase a diverse lineup of 41 sports. Currently, 33 sports have been confirmed for the Indian athletes list, with the potential for additional selections. Athletes competing in karate and handball, which are facing governance challenges, will still be considered for inclusion. Health Minister Mandaviya assured that eligible athletes would not be penalized due to the administrative issues within their federations. Furthermore, the men’s volleyball team is poised to join the Indian contingent, following their recent achievement of securing a bronze medal at the AVC Volleyball Cup in Ahmedabad, which enhanced their ranking to seventh in Asia according to FIVB standings.
In contrast, both the men’s and women’s football teams did not qualify for this year’s Asian Games. Despite receiving government approval for last year’s Hangzhou Asian Games without meeting the top-eight criterion in Asia, the Sports Ministry is now adhering strictly to its selection policies and will not make exceptions. The current AFC ranking places the Indian men’s football team at 26th.
