Sweety Kujur to lead India at U-18 women’s Asia Cup

With Pro League berth at stake, Indian women eye positive start against USA

New Delhi – Sweety Kujur has been appointed as the captain of the 18-member Indian women’s Under-18 hockey team for the upcoming Asia Cup tournament, set to take place in Kakamigahara, Japan from May 29 to June 6.

The Indian team enters the tournament following extensive preparation at the national camp in Bhopal. Under the guidance of coach Rani, the focus was on fostering team synergy, enhancing match fitness, and refining tactical skills.

Rani highlighted the significance of the tournament, stating, “This tournament is a fantastic platform for these young athletes to gain international exposure and understand the demands of high-pressure matches,” as mentioned in a Hockey India release.

Led by captain Sweety Kujur, this emerging Indian squad will have the chance to challenge some of the strongest teams in Asia.

The team’s pool stage will culminate in a match against Singapore on June 2. The top two teams from Pools A and B will advance to the semi-finals on June 5, with the final match slated for June 6.

The team boasts a forward line consisting of five players, with Kujur leading the offensive attack, supported by Nousheen Naz, Priyanka Minz, Sandeepa Kumari, and Nancy Saroha.

As part of their training regimen, the Indian squad engaged in a four-match series against Australia in Bhopal, concluding with a morale-boosting victory.

India is positioned in Pool A and will face off against Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore. Their campaign kicks off against Malaysia on May 30, followed by a match against Korea on May 31.

Pool B includes teams from China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, and Bangladesh.
