In a thrilling semifinal matchup at the Under-18 Asian Championships in Kakamigahara, the Indian Under-18 women’s hockey team faced a tough challenge against China. Unfortunately, the team was eliminated from gold medal contention after losing in a dramatic penalty shootout on Friday.

Event Context

In the third minute of the final quarter, China took the lead with a penalty corner. Although India’s first rusher managed to block the initial shot, Zhang Yuzheng capitalized on the rebound, finishing calmly to put her team ahead.

However, India’s advantage was short-lived as Kiran netted a penalty corner shortly after, leveling the score at 2-2 by the end of regulation time.

The second semi-final for women is set to feature Japan against Korea, while India will face the losing team in the bronze medal match on Saturday.

In a thrilling encounter that ended in a 2-2 stalemate after four quarters, the Indians fell to a 1-3 defeat in the shootout. Nousheen Naz and Kiran Ekka were the goal scorers for India, while Li ZeYan and Zhang Yuzheng found the back of the net for China during regulation play.

India is set to vie for the bronze medal on Saturday.

The match began on a positive note for India, as they netted the first goal just three minutes into the game. Captain Sweety Kujur executed a fantastic pass from midfield to Nousheen, who unleashed a powerful back-handed shot that broke the deadlock.

China earned a penalty corner in the 21st minute, but Indian goalkeeper Mahak Parihar brilliantly saved Feng Jiaxin’s drag-flick attempt. However, just three minutes later, a defensive mistake by India allowed China’s Li ZeYan to score a field goal, equalizing the match.

In the shootout, China secured victory with a score of 3-1, thanks in large part to standout saves from their goalkeeper Liu Xue. Lu Tong Tong, Ge Chen, and Guo Jiaxin successfully converted their chances, while Sandeepa Kumari was the only Indian player to score.

Team Analysis

During the third quarter, India earned several penalty corners but failed to find the back of the net against China. Despite numerous opportunities at both ends, the match remained level at 1-1 as the teams headed into the final quarter.
